Llanfair­pwllgwyn­gyllgo­gery­chwyrn­drobwll­llanty­silio­gogo­goch is a large village on the  on the island of Anglesey in North Wales and at 58 characters it the name is the longest officially recognised place name in the United Kingdom and one of the longest in the world.

We were delighted to produce these brass signs (5), not for the village, but for export to China and Europe.

The signs showing the full name Llanfair­pwllgwyn­gyllgo­gery­chwyrn­drobwll­llanty­silio­gogo­goch were over 2m long and very heavy.

Llanfair­pwllgwyn­gyllgo­gery­chwyrn­drobwll­llanty­silio­gogo­goch can be translated as
Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the red cave.

 

How to pronounce Llanfair­pwllgwyn­gyllgo­gery­chwyrn­drobwll­llanty­silio­gogo­goch

Llan - fair - pwll - gwyn - gyll - go - ger - ych - wyrn - drob - wll - llan - ty - silio - go - go - goch

LLAN – You pronounce this like Scottish word "clan".

FAIR – when you pronounce this change the "f" for a "v" and say the English word "fire" (not like "fair" in English!)

PWLL – this is pronounce “pu” (as in put) with “ll” added

GWYN – This bit is easy – just put a “g” before the English word “win”.

GYLL – Start by saying the English word "gil" (what fish use to breath) Then change the "l" (as in "let") to "ll”.

GO – Simply pronounce it as you would the "go" in the English word  "gosh".

GER - Like "care" but replace the "c" for a "g".

YCH – This bit is difficult. Start by saying "duck". Now remove the "d" to leave "uck". Now change the "ck" to "ch" as pronounced in the Scottish word "loch".

WYRN - Simply say the English word "win".

 DROB – Simply ad a “b” to the end of the English word "draw".

WLL – You say this the same as "pwll" above but without the "p".

 LLAN – Repeat the "llan" at the beginning of this word.

 TY – Just say "t" in "twig".

 SILIO – Add “o” to the end of "silly". The "o" is pronounced as in "dot".

 GO - Simply pronounce it as you would the "go" in the English word  "gosh".

 GO - Simply pronounce it as you would the "go" in the English word  "gosh".

 GOCH – The last bit.... Simply say "go" as above, put the "ch" after it and that's all!
