How to name your house

What are some do's and don’ts of naming your house in the UK?

When it comes to naming your house in the UK, there are a few do's and don’ts that you should be mindful of:

  • The name you choose shouldn’t be too cutesy or funny. You want people to take your home seriously, rather than see it as a joke.
  • Make sure that the name isn’t too difficult to pronounce or spell. If people can’t easily remember the name of your house, it won’t be of much help when it comes to advertising or selling the property.
  • The name chosen must not be the same or similar to any other property name in the area as this may cause confusion for the postal or emergency services.
  • You also want to make sure the name is easy to remember and that it accurately reflects the property’s location.

Registering your house name

If your house already has a number in the postal address, but NOT a name, then you can add a house name without officially contacting the local council.

But, in order to avoid confusion, it’s would be sensible to register your house name with the local council. This will make it easier for post and deliveries to be directed to your address as well as to make sure that you’re the only person with a particular house name.

The new house name will not form part of the registered address and you are still required to use the house number in your address and to display the number on the property in a position where it can be clearly seen from the road.

Changing the name of your house

If your house already has a name but no number then the house name will form part of the official registered address.

If  you wish to change the name of the property you must put your request to your local council in writing, giving the present full address and stating clearly the requested new name.
