The House Nameplate Company's top tips for cleaning your windows.

“I can’t wait to clean my windows” - Said no one ever.

It’s an arduous task isn’t it? Cleaning your windows. And it’s not one of those that you can sort of half do. Once you start, there’s no going back, you have to tackle EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Inside and out.

The good thing about it though, is once it’s done, you don’t have to worry about it for another 3 or 4 years. OK, maybe months.

I thought it would be a good idea to provide my top 5 window cleaning tips for you to try.

So here goes.

#1 Clear away the past

No, don’t throw away your old photos….

Grab yourself some old newspapers, scrunch them up and wipe down your windows to get rid of all that old dust.

It’s best to start with a clean canvas, because otherwise you’ll end up wiping dust into your cleaning solution.

It doesn’t need to take long, a quick once over should do the trick.

#2 what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east and Windolene is the sun.

I am all for natural products. Wherever I can, I use natural cleaning products that I can concoct out of my kitchen cupboard. But window cleaning is serious business, and for me there is only one product.

WINDOLENE!

Amazing stuff. And it’s pink.

It’s great for getting rid of tough grit and grime, all you need to do is get yourself 3 cloths; a wipe-on, a wipe-off and a buffer.

Use a healthy dollop of window lean, and using circular motions (it really works for me) coat the whole window. Leave it for a couple of minutes then wipe off using your clean cloth.  Use the 3rd to doubly make sure you’ve not missed any smudges, and it gives it an extra shine.

Stand back and look at the view. Use this method inside and out.

#3 When life gives you lemons, make lemon scented window cleaner.

If you really don’t like using man made products in your home, which is quite understandable then my second choice would be this beautifully smelling potion.

Mix 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and warm water in a bowl and transfer into a spray bottle.

Lemon is fantastic for cutting through grease because of the acidity.

For this method, you’ll need a cloth and a whole heap of kitchen roll or some spare dry tea towels.

Soak your cloth and again, use the circular motions to coat the windows. No need to wait, just wipe it off again, and grab a separate cloth to buff up the shine.

You’ll have really clean windows that smell great too.

#4 Hello Sunshine! Actually, No.

Wait for a cloudy day to clean your windows. The sun is great for helping you see the spots you’ve missed but it also makes everything dry faster. And quick dry equal’s lots of streaks.

Nobody wants that.

Don’t wait for the cold months of February, by all means pick a warm day in May, just stay out of direct sunlight. You can always stick a jumper on if it starts to feel cold.

#5 Lists are a form of power.

I have loads of lists, I even have lists to remind me to make lists.
