Can I name my house without contacting my local council?

How to name your home. The Council has jurisdiction over the naming of individual properties. They only have powers to name streets, and to number properties on streets. A property owner can name their property without contacting the Council as long as it does not conflict with an existing property name in that locality. If your property/house has a number, this must still be displayed and referred to in any correspondence; for example:

'My House'

1 My Road (official address)

Town

County

Postcode

How do I name my house?

Once you have decided to name your property it is worth asking your local Council if they have any objection to the house name that you wish to use. If they have no objection the Council will notify the Council’s Registration Section and Revenue Section, emergency services and statutory undertakers, such as Gas, Electric and Water services of the new address.

Developing a Single Property/Small Development - How do I number properties?

If you are a developer of a new property (single or small development), you should contact your local council as soon as you commence work on site. A single or small development will usually be named or numbered into the existing street.  Any new schemes are considered in consultation with the Royal Mail, Ward Members and the Town/Parish Council in which they are located. In some cases there may be a requirement for Committee approval of the proposed naming / numbering suggestions.

Once the new house numbers/street names are allocated the information is then sent to public utilities, emergency services, Land Registry, and relevant Council services. You will also be sent a copy of the registered address from which the council would ask you to inform your prospective purchasers of their new property address.
